Daphene Jean Baptiste is 16 years old and in fifth grade. She has a learning disability, but the village has no special education teacher. Her parents have six children—three girls, three boys. Her mother is a 46-year-old born-again believer in Jesus, and practices witchcraft. Her mother longs to give her daughter up for adoption in hopes of a better future for her. Her father is 52 years old. Her mother works in the salt mine, and her father works in a small garden.
